Sunrise from the West
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's
Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until the sun rises
from the West: and when the people see it, then whoever will be living
on the surface of the earth will have faith, and that is (the time) when
no good will it do to a soul to believe then, if it believed not
before."

The Scientific Approach
The science of astronomy states
that most of the rotational and orbital motions in the solar system are in
the same direction. Motions which are in this direction are referred to as
direct motions, while motions which are in the opposite direction to the
general direction of motion are referred to as being retrograde.
Retrograde motion of Mars. Under normal circumstances, the planet
appears to move to the East (upwards, in the diagram), but when it is
being overtaken by the Earth, our faster motion makes Mars appear to be
going backwards (downwards, in the diagram). The normal motion is called
direct motion, and the backwards motion is called
retrograde motion.

Most scientists
state that all the planets, including planet Earth, will go through the same phase at least
once. Planet Earth will
move in the opposite direction some day, thus the sun will rise
from the west.

The rising of the sun from the west is mentioned in the ahadith
(narrations from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),
and is one of the major signs of the Day of Judgement.
Our beloved messenger Mohamed (peace be upon him) said: "One of the
signs of the hour is that the sun will rise from the west, where no
longer Tauba (forgiveness) will be granted." Most Islamic scholars
mentioned that the rise of the sun from the west will occur
only once, and on that day the sun will rise from the west, thereafter
again from the east and continue as long as Allah wishes. This is what
is happening on Mars at present. It stops, then it changes its course
of direction for a short period of time, thereafter returns to its
original pattern.
And one of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), 'Abdullah
Bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I memorized from the
messenger (SAW) a hadith I will never forget. I heard the messenger of
Allah (peace be upon him) say: The first ayah (sign) to come is the
rise of the sun from the west." [Ahmad]
And the messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah places His hand
at night to forgive the sinners of the morning, and places His hand in
the morning to forgive the sinners of the night until the sun will
rise from the west." [Muslim]
